Mentor for At-risk Youth
We are in need of caring adults to commit to spending 3hrs a week with one of our at-risk youth between the ages of 6 and 12. Many of the children involved in our programs lack a positive adult role-model and rarely, if ever, receive any positive one-on-one attention. Having a mentor would give these youth the attention they deserve and drastically decrease the truant behavior that is too often seen in neglected youth. As a mentor you would be a positive influence in a child's life to prevent them from getting involved with the surrounding influence of gangs, drugs and violence. Just spending 3 hours a week with a child could make a long-lasting and life changing difference in their lives.
Mentors will spend atleast one day a week at our After School Program. During the mentor's visit, s/he will talk or play with the child during recreation time, help him/her follow rules during story/snack time and then help him/her finish homework or work on reading.
The requirement for this position is the commitment of 3 hours/week for six months to one year. However, if you are able to increase your hours/week, the commitment can be for a shorter period of time.
Volunteers may be subject to a background check.

Tutor an At-risk child! Help with Homework and be a Reading Buddy!
The House of Neighborly Service runs an after school program for 5 - 11 year old at-risk youth in the City of South Tucson. In this area, 57% of youth live below the poverty level and the drop out rate for the feeder high school, Pueblo High School, is more than double that of the Tucson Unified School District. During the school year tutors are needed Monday through Thursday from 3:30-5pm. Many of our youth are falling behind in their schoolwork because they are rarely given the individual attention that they need. Even one hour a week of individual attention from a caring adult could completely turn their lives around.
We have been encouraging our participants to read by starting the Escuelita Reads program. Each child sets a goal for how many books he or she can read in one month. After reading a book, they have to complete a reading log. If they reach their goal at the end of the month, they get to celebrate with an award. Awards, for example, are an ice cream party, a field trip or a prize.
The requirements for this position include: patience and the ability to effectively communicate and work with youth. In order for the tutoring to be successful we also ask that the volunteer attend the program on a consistent basis and be able to schedule visits ahead of time. If you'd like to improve your ability to help a child read, we can arrange a time for you to get a short literacy training from one of our Reading Specialists.
